About Me

I have been programming since about 2004.  I first started out programming before this as a high school student when I would program on my TI-82.  I guess that dates me pretty well.  I don’t have any idea what the language was based on, but pretty basic language that in retrospect was something like Fortran.

Unfortunately I didn’t realize that I wanted to be a software developer till much later.  I ended up going to The Ohio State University where I received my BS in Industrial and Systems Engineering.  I did that for a while, but at some point found myself as a free lance developer and working on my own hosting company.  Although this was fun, I found myself broke, but finally realized what I wanted to do for a living.

Thus my return to school in 2010 to pursue a Computer Science Engineering degree.  Returned to Ohio State where I worked part time as a free lancer and worked.  In spring 2012 I finished.  It was interesting returning to school, but was so worth it.  As a freelancer I had learned PHP, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, etc…  But I did not have the deeper understanding that I feel you really need to become a better developer.

Since graduation I have taken a full time job as Java EE developer.  This really isn’t the truth though, I do more fixing and feature adding that anything.  So I feel more like I reverse engineer and do Enterprise crappy development on Spring, Maven, etc…  The only real projects I work on anymore are my personal projects, freelance work, and projects I squeeze in at work.

Freelance Work ($35 / hr)

I still do some freelance work when I have the chance.  If you have something that you want some help on or have some work for me shoot me an email (willsmelser at gmail).

  • Java (2 years)
    • Spring, Maven, JUnit, Mule, etc…
